It's now being widely reported that the state of Alabama is involved in deciding whether or not Harper Lee's much anticipated book should be published. Go Set A Watchman would be a sequel to Lee's iconic piece To Kill A Mockingbird which was published about 50 years ago. In Go Set A Watchman, Scout returns 20 years later to visit her father Atticus. But there is much more to this book than just a reunion between father and daughter. Ms. Lee actually wrote Go Set A Watchman first but the publisher was so taken by the depiction of Scout's flashbacks that they asked her to write a book from the point of view of Scout as a child. Hence, To Kill A Mockingbird was born. So, I guess you can say that To Kill A Mockingbird is technically the sequel. Or is it the prequel? OK, now I'm confused.
Harper Lee, now 88 years old, lives in an assisted living facility in Monroeville, AL. In 2007 Ms. Lee had a stroke and now suffers from hearing and vision loss. The caretakers and those who know her well say that her mental condition depends upon the day. Many believe she's not of sound mind to legally consent to the publication. They say that during her 55 years of living as a bit of a recluse, she could have had it published if she so wished. Others, such as the town of Monroeville, argue that she is lucid enough to make the decision and to deprive the world of her work would be a tragedy. As the debate still continues, many have claimed that this is a form of elder abuse because it's taking advantage of Ms. Lee in her fragile state. This is what caught the attention of the Alabama State Human Resources Department and they are now looking into the case themselves.
A dear friend of Harper Lee, Tonja Carter (a lawyer), discovered the manuscript of GoSet A Watchman in the fall of 2014. It had been affixed to an original typescript of To Kill A Mockingbird which was found in a secure location. The newly discovered manuscript is set to be published on July 14, 2015 by Harper, an imprint of HarperCollins.
